Cincinnati Reds meet at home tonight St. Louis Cardinals like a small favorite. The Reds simply dominated in this series with 2 wins in a row. This is a against tradition last games between both teams when the Cardinals are with 9-4 w/l. Now the Reds are 10-4 w/l in their last 14 home games and looked for sweep tonight and keeping their chances for playoff spot in this unpredictable division. St. Louis are 0-8 w/l in their last 8 road games. The Reds starter is a really good reason to take home win here. This is their ace Aaron Harang who made good season by now. He is with 14-4 w/l and 3.64 ERA,while his team won 22 of his 30 season starts. For St. Louis will start Kip Wells who made disappointing season by now. With record of 6-16 w/l and 5.65 ERA,also 3-9 w/l and 6.07 ERA he is a good to bet against him. In his career against the Dodgers he is with 2-9 w/l and 4.80 ERA overall. Take Cincinnati at home to sweep this one.... Liked this post? to our RSS feed and get loads more! Tip Viewed 667 times. "August 2007 Reds Review Part 2: Hitting" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-13 18:16:22

Apologies for the delay in this--I cognise that this is now more for posterity than genuine arouse. What can I say? It's been a wild couple of weeks with relatives visiting and the move to Vegas. And the Reds haven't been real exciting save for the unbelievably gratifying opportunity to and effectively knock them out of the race.. the Cards currently undergo a than the Reds so they undergo absolutely no business being considered contenders if the Reds are out of it!!! ;)What a difference a month makes. The Reds' offense surged in July posting a season-best attach of 6.0 park-adjusted runs per bet their best since April '06. Let's be at the individual player performances: The GoodIn July the group of Edwin Encarnacion. Ryan Freel. Jeff Conine. Norris Hopper. Javier Valentin. Alex Gonzalez and Pedro Lopez created just 36 runs in 408 coat appearances (accounting for 42% of all Reds plate appearances on the month). In August the same assort (substituting Cantu for Conine) nearly doubled their create producing a combined for 65 runs in 345 plate appearances (34% of Reds coat appearances). be more? In July the Reds' top offensive contributer was Brandon Phillips who created 17 runs. In August five Cincinnati Reds (Dunn. Griffey. Phillips. Keppinger and Encarnacion) bested that mark all creating 20 or more runs! Furthermore seven players posted OPS's over 0.900 on the month. It really seemed like a completely different team. Adam Dunn in particular was nothing short of awesome. He posted an 0.443 OBP and an 0.621 SLG thanks to a ridiculous 0.345 ISO. And he did all of this while posting an unusually low BABIP of 0.268. His 20% strikeout rate was easily his lowest monthly evaluate of the year which might be a big part of his success. The big lug is really turning it up as the season winds down. The Lucky and Unlucky... I dislike to be a sourpuss but aside from Dunn most of the offensive explosions we saw in August be to have as much to do with luck as good performance. Of Reds hitters with over 50 AB's in August nine had BABIP's of 0.340 of higher and two (Hopper and Gonzalez) actually topped 0.400. Those sorts of BABIP rates are nearly impossible to maintain over an extended period of time and unfortunately indicates that at least a administer of the Reds hitters' success was due to luck. If we use my rough BIP adjusted OPS (BIPaOPS) to adjust singles to set all hitters to league add up BABIP the Reds hitting looks decidedly more mundane. To be sure there were still some very good performances with seven hitters posting 0.800+ BIPaOPS's. But only Dunn. Gonzalez and Hamilton (who actually seemed a bit unlucky) go out above 0.900. Edwin Encarnacion unfortunately was among those who be the beat after the BABIP adjustment. His power finally seems to have returned which is a huge sign for him looking send. My approach of adjusting for BABIP does nothing to act away from that. But he was also extremely aggressive in August walking in just 2% of his coat appearances. If he continues to avoid walks as he did in August and his BABIP drops below the 0.376 aim he enjoyed last month his overall numbers won't be particularly good. It's disappointing because before I saw these numbers. I was ready to go away parading his month around as bear witness that things had finally clicked for him. I'm still encouraged by his new-found cater but there's a way in which I feel desire I'm comfort waiting for him to put everything back together. Hopefully he can do that in September. Tonight was a. The biggest discrepancy between actual OPS and BIPaOPS was Norris Hopper whose unreal 0.455 OBP in August propelled him to an 0.934 OPS and the 6th-best runs created totals on the team. He did it however with a BABIP of 0.449! One has to think that this ordain displace substantially in the future. I query however if it will displace as far as his 19.3% line control percentage would tell that it should (0.193 + 0.120 = ~0.313 BABIP). A big part of Hopper's success in August stemmed from his ability to past the pitcher. As some of this season has shown players with a combination of speed and excellent bunting skills can alter the infield hit an extremely effective weapon. For example perhaps the best bunter in baseball today of the Colorado Rockies has had BABIP's in excess of 0.330 each of the measure three years (and twice over 0.350) despite lie drive rates between 17-19% (guess 0.290-0.310 BABIP). So I think in Hopper's inspect that as long as he can continue to use the hit hit effectively he has a chance to be a dependable offensive threat--but even so he won't be a 0.900+ OPS write of threat and thus shouldn't be taking AB's away from someone desire Hamilton who can be just that (if he can just be healthy). The UglyThe most remarkable thing about the Reds' offense in August was that even after adjusting for BABIP no one (except Hopper--but see above) had an OPS below 0.700 who had more than David Ross's 22 plate appearances. So I'm not going to even try to leverage a critique towards anyone in this lay. Heck of a month to be a hitter in the Queen City. Welcome approve. The month of August was fool's gold as far as the team offense was concerned. The aggroup BABIP was around 15% higher in August than it was for 2007 overall. In other words it was a fluke. The team also was lucky Pythagorean-wise. Adding these two factors together incorrectly can potentially recite disaster for the Reds' 2008 season. If management looks at the offense and the team preserve and reach the conclusion that this aggroup can compete with a bring together of minor pitching tweaks it is going to be a long 2008. And of cover the buzz on the message boards crackles like lightning. Most of the folks are all twitterpated with the Reds' hitters and don't want to see any of them moved for pitching. You can't trade ________ (Dunn. Griffey. EE or fill-in-the-blanks) is omnipresent. I sincerely wish that Wayne Krivsky isn't being fooled. I hope he doesn't think he can trade spare parts such as Freel or Hatteberg and come up with the pitching that this franchise desperately needs. Granted. August was a fun month to be a fan of the Cincinnati Reds. But it was more mirage than oasis. Thanks,Dave Yeah your mention echos a lot of what I wrote about August thus far. It wasn't all mirage -- as I said change surface after adjusting for BABIP many of the Reds comfort had "good" months (0.800+ OPS's). But you're right that this is not a 6.0 r/g team. If Eddie keeps hitting. Griffey is able to act hitting (his line control rate did banish a bit in August so his babip might not be out of lie) and we can somehow squeek out plus offense from our shortstops this can probably be a 5 r/g team next year. But it'd act some substantial improvements on pitching and (especially) defense to transform the Reds into a allow contender. -j On Baseball & the Reds is the blog of Justin Inaz a displaced Cincinnati Reds fan currently living in Phoenix. Arizona.

OH communicate: WLW-AM (700) and Reds Radio Network Pitching Matchup: Reds RHP Aaron Harang (14-4. 3.64 ERA) vs. Cardinals RHP Kip Wells (6-16. 5.65 ERA) Pretty good pitching matchup for the Reds as they aim for the SWEEEEEEEEP of the Cards.  Funny how everyone is in like with EE again.  Just a couple months ago he was no longer in the fans’ plans…come up MOST fans’ plans.  This entry was posted on Thursday. September 13th. 2007 at 9:41 amand is filed under. You can follow any responses to this entry through the feed. You can or from your own place. SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!!! Nice knowing you. Cards!! Reds compete SPOILER!!! Maybe the Twins will act Dookie back and we can get a REAL GM in here?!? This just in… Joey Votto is pretty good! Unfortunately. I’d like to see Cantu get a chance to compete every day as well. I think that guy can displace too. But you’re not going to sit Votto or Phillips. Now that Hamilton is cause to be perceived and probably done for the year shouldn’t Krivsky be on the phone trying to choose up another lefty OF for us to plug in? We only have 5 of them already. Gotta say…I don’t want any part of Walt Jocketty. If THAT’S the pitching staff they can put together. I want no part of it. The Cards staff is brutal!!! David Eckstein led off Thursday's bet with a manifold and scored on a free and Pujols' sacrifice fly. That was the only hit the Cardinals managed off Harang in the first five innings. The Reds wasted several chances against the enigmatic Wells who lost seven straight games earlier this season and now has lost his last four starts. The Reds left the bases loaded in the third when Edwin Encarnacion popped out. They loaded the bases again in the fourth but managed only Jeff Keppinger's free fly that tied it at 1. Votto's RBI double — his third hit of the bet — broke the tie in the fifth and Ross followed with his first homer in 53 at-bats. Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Aaron Harang ordain take the mound this afternoon against the division-rival St. Louis Cardinals in the finale of a three-game series at Great American roll lay. Harang who is 14-4 with a 3.64 ERA in 30 starts this season had been 4-0 in five starts before going winless in his previous two outings (0-1). Harang did not factor in the outcome of a 4-3 loss to Milwaukee on Saturday as he gave up two runs and seven hits in seven innings of work. Seems like Oliver Perez has had some success against the Reds but my memory may be tainted since I saw Perez fling a one-hitter at Cincinnati a couple of years ago when he was still with Pittsburgh. Discuss the bet here…ordain it be Joey Votto’s major unify innovate? ; they need to let Votto play every day. N. Hopper cfJ. Keppinger 3bK. Griffey Jr rfB. Phillips 2bA. Dunn lfJ. Cantu 1bA. Gonzalez ssD. Ross cM. Belisle p Hey it’s a lefty on the forge - Votto gets a day of leeway to make sure the Stowes got his label spelled right on his uniform and everything. Maybe he’ll pinch-hit for his first appearance like Hamilton did. To echo what Thom B was talking about Griffey his slugging numbers undergo dropped the 2nd half of the season. More than likely it has been fatigue since he hasn’t played in this many games since 2000. I would undergo bet a hundred bucks that Mackanin would go away freaking Jorge Cantu instead of Votto. Frankly. I don’t care about the lefty/righty matchups at this point. Votto is going to be playing against lefties and righties if he ends up being as good as advertised. Why not let him play against lefties this month when an 0-4 isn’t going to hurt this crappy aggroup any? He has to get experience against lefties at some inform. Maybe we do undergo some reason to pay attention in the future. Although I fully evaluate Dunn to be wearing another aggroup’s uniform next year. I know Ross’s defensive metrics aren’t outstanding but he seems to impel out a ton of runners and compete really outstanding defense … to my untrained eye. In 83.2 go innings versus the Reds. Perez has 105 strikeouts. Ouch. However he’s also allowed 14 homers which accounts for the 3.98 ERA vs. Cincinnati in his career. Will the media shut up about Appalachian State disturb of Michigan! It’s not like AP was a lousy aggroup. What a clump of media hype and I actually hate Michigan. Hey Chad. I’ll stop being condescending when you forbid being the cynic. This front-office isn’t responsible for eight straight years of losing and they cannot realistically alter the displace in two years. As far as the promotions - I’d accept if these kids weren’t performing after they’re promoted. But in many cases they are and that’s encouraging. I’m a Reds fan not a Yankee fan. Have been since the 60’s. Therefore I’m not going to constantly be critical when this organization takes some measure to rebuild. Marge and Bowden tore it down not Krivsky. It’s being built from the bottom-up as it should be so be patient. Another SMART play by Phillips - sees no one covering second with the big shift and takes off for back up base on Perez’s first move. I comfort evaluate that 2 SB on one compete down in Washington was the most amazing thing I’ve seen all year. Jukich is 24 (be 25 later this month) and comfort pitching A ball…so…but he did fling come up since coming to the Reds. I’d undergo expected him to be moved to AA at some inform during the second half though… Sorry Jim it’s a huge story. Never has a aggroup from AA defeat a ranked team. A friend of exploit who is a big time Michigan fan said he’d undergo fired Carr before he got off the handle. I agree it’s huge…but Appy express is a VERY good aggroup for that aim. What I hate about it as a Virginia alum is that everyone keeps mentioning UVa’s basketball loss to Chaminade in 1982 as a similar type disturb. As bad as UVa football is alter now. I don’t change surface want to think about the University during this time of the year. It is real. I checked it out because of the commercial during the Reds games. Shows how desperate the Reds are for ad bucks. Used car sales can’t be far off. I query if on farmersonly com if they accept populate to limit compose searches to specific.
